L'âge de la mort du chien: Three Free Films By Luis Buñuel

"The Auteurs is now showing 3 films by Spanish surrealist Luis Buñuel for FREE in the US to celebrate the release of the beautiful remastering of the filmmaker’s unheralded 1956 French/Mexican co-production Death in the Garden, shot in gorgeous Eastmancolor and starring Michel Piccoli, Simone Signoret, and Charles Vanel.

Death in the Garden and two classic Buñuel films from his earlier and most vividly surreal period, Un chien andalou (1929) and L’âge d’or (1930) are available to watch for free in the US. The Auteurs is presenting the 1956 film alongside more renowned films made before and after to put it on the context of his career."

New Equipment in the Media Library Microtext Research Collection

The ScanPro 2000 Universal Scanner is the latest development in microformat scanning technology.  It is ultra compact with a desktop footprint the size of two sheets of letter paper and can handle all microformats, including microopaque and ultrafiche. The opaque feature is particularly important for the UWM Libraries since it will make our extensive microprint collections, Landmarks of Science, Early American Imprints I & II and Early American Newspapers, easily accessible for the first time.  The ScanPro is software driven and editing features that were once done manually are now easily adjusted using the onscreen menu. Other outstanding features include a 24" monitor, optical lenses 7 to 105x, and an Energy Star rating that exceeds current guidelines.

New in the Media Library DVD Collection - Chinese Classic Animation: The Te Wei Collection.

Te Wei, born in Shanghai in 1915, began his career as a cartoonist, but quickly developed an interest in animation. He went on to devote his life and career to making "Chinese animation reflective of Chinese customs, tales and techniques." He was inspired by traditional ink and water drawings, landscape paintings, Peking opera and ancient folktales to create beautiful and uniquely Chinese films. Although he was prevented from working during the Cultural Revolution, he and his work are now considered national treasures. To honor Te Wei's 90th birthday in 2005, the Shanghai Animation Film Studio released this two-disc set featuring five beloved films, including Where is Mamma or Tadpoles in Search of Their Mom, ". . . a homage to the water-color paintings of Qui BaiShi."

How Historians-in-Training Use the Media Library Microform Research Collections

Students in Prof. Margo Anderson's senior capstone history seminar, Incarcerated: Japanese Americans in World War II, use many library resources during the semester they spend researching and writing ". . . a piece of history." One heavily used primary source is the 35-reel microfilm set Papers of the U.S. Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians. Part 1, Numerical File Archive. This Commission was created in 1980 and charged with reviewing facts surrounding the 1942 Executive Order 9066 ". . . authorizing the War Department to evacuate and incarcerate civilians 'as a protection against espionage and against sabotage.'" Thousands of written documents accumulated during the Commission's tenure have been collected from archives and libraries across the country and preserved for scholars in this valuable microfilm collection.Primary Sources in the UW-Milwaukee Microform Collection provides more information about this and other research collections.
